The Volkswagen ID.5 is a distinctively styled and practical all-electric SUV. One of its many selling points is the maximum 313-mile range that it offers while another is its capacious boot. This desirable, affordable-to-run and eco-friendly vehicle comes in Pro, Pro Performance and GTX variants, and Style, Tech and Max trim levels – which version will you choose?
With its rising window line, swooping roofline and elevated ride height alone, the ID.5 more than competes in a crowded SUV market place. The vehicle rides on eye-catching, efficiency-enhancing 19-inch alloy wheels as standard and features LED headlights that react automatically to ambient light conditions. LEDs are fitted at the rear of the car too, complete with dynamic turn indicators. And unlike most coupés, the Volkswagen ID.5 provides unfettered five-door access.
The vehicle’s sporty exterior qualities carry through to the cabin with, for instance, a leather-wrapped, heated and multifunction steering wheel. Nevertheless, the ID.5 delivers impressive practicality and space, with headroom, for example, that exceeds that offered by the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Meanwhile, a 549-litre boot is also greater than is provided by the aforementioned muscle car, not to mention the Kia EV6. And with split-folding rear seats dropped, cargo capacity expands to a not-inconsiderable 1,561 litres.
ID.5 Pro variants are installed with a 77kWh battery that delivers 172bhp and a maximum 316-mile range. If a little more power is required, consider choosing the Pro Performance Tech or Max trim, either of which produces 201bhp. For optimal potency and off-road capability, select the GTX Style model, which comes with four-wheel drive while producing 295bhp.
The Volkswagen ID.5 has been awarded a maximum five-star crash-test rating by Euro NCAP. Passive safety features include multiple airbags and seat belt reminders – and ISOFIX child-seat fixtures situated on outer rear positions. Driver aids include Front Assist, which automatically applies braking pressure if collision with another vehicle, cyclist or pedestrian is deemed likely. Meanwhile, a rear-mounted camera is a welcome aid, ensuring that reversing into a parking space or garage is a breeze.
Supplied as standard, a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system includes a six-speaker sound system, featuring DAB radio and four USB-C inputs. You can easily and safely access your smartphone’s apps via the car’s own display thanks to the inclusion of wireless App-Connect. Speaking of wireless, all models offer wireless charging for your compatible mobile devices. Last but not least, a standard-issue Discover Pro navigation system helps you plan each journey with ease.
