New Volkswagen Touareg

POA

Boasting a smart-looking exterior and a sophisticated interior, the Volkswagen Touareg is a rather luxurious and serene SUV that’s handy in off-road situations. It’s packed with standard-issue tech too – and it’s available with a highly efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Vehicle variants

There’s a strong argument for saying that the entry-level Elegance trim is the only Touareg version that’s needed, particularly since it’s available as a plug-in hybrid. Nevertheless, it’s hard not to be tempted by the extras which are included with Black Edition and R grades.

Interior The new Touareg is wider and longer than before, ensuring that there’s even more space than is offered by the outgoing model. Yes, it’s a big vehicle, one that allows five adults to stretch their legs while enjoying ample shoulder room.

Big boot With all seats in place, the Touareg boasts an impressive 810-litre luggage capacity which outstrips that offered by, say, the Audi Q7 or BMW X5. With rear seats folded, there’s 1,880 litres of load volume to play with, nearly as much as is available with the Volvo XC90. Furthermore, access is made easy by a standard-issue power tailgate.
Flexible Touareg With rear seats that slide up to 1.6 metres, it’s easy to create even more legroom in the back. Rear-row passengers are treated to adjustable backrests too, which can be angled by as much as 21 degrees.
Cabin conveniences Keyless access, automatic four-zone climate control (with additional rear controls), a tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof, and heated and power-adjustable front seats with memory functionality. These are just some examples of the Touareg’s standard-issue features.
Tech-tastic The Touareg is loaded with desirable technology as standard. For instance, a 12-inch high-resolution digital instrument display and a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system both feature. The latter incorporates Discover Pro Max navigation, an eight-speaker sound system (with DAB radio), Bluetooth connectivity, four USB-C inputs, Apple/Android smartphone integration and more.
Exterior Volkswagen’s flagship SUV certainly looks the part, and it behaves appropriately too, featuring wide-opening doors that afford easy access, for instance.

All-weather illumination Automatic IQ.LIGHT HD Matrix headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights and rear fog lamps are all included with baseline Elegance trims. As well as delivering exceptional driver visibility in a range of low-light and poor weather conditions, they ensure that the Touareg is always easy for other road users to identify.
Alloy allure Impactful 21-inch Leeds Black alloy wheels are fitted as standard (and are also included with Black Edition trims). Top-tier R grades, meanwhile, ride on full-size, 22-inch Estoril Black alloys that sport a contrasting diamond-turned finish.
Smart glass A laminated windscreen provides an additional level of protection for driver and co-passenger, and it’s heat-insulated too. Rear windows are tinted by up to 85%, thus blocking out the majority of harmful UV rays while preventing the cabin from overheating on hot days. They also serve to prevent interior warping and fading.
Overhead storage If even a maximum 1,880-litre boot capacity isn’t enough for your needs, you always have the option of carrying extra items overhead. This is because the Volkswagen Touareg is equipped with standard-issue roof rails, to which you can attach a maximum-volume 460-litre roof box, for instance.
