The fourth-biggest selling car in the UK in 2016, the Volkswagen Golf continues to attract buyers over 40 years after it was first launched. The latest version combines the Golf’s classic timeless appeal with a fresh new look for 2017.
The design of the new Golf cleverly brings the car right up to date, while retaining its instantly recognisable and distinctive Golf style. Attention to detail is a strength for Volkswagen, and this shows in stylish touches such as the LEDs in the daytime running lights and at the rear, and neat indicator lights in the door mirrors.
Trim levels for the Volkswagen Golf start with the S and finish with the range-topping R. The entry-level S has body-coloured bumpers, handles and door mirrors and you have the option to add alloy wheels. 16-inch alloy wheels are fitted as standard on the SE trim, while the GTI has 17-inch and the Golf R boasts 18-inch alloy wheels.
The interior is smart and comfortable, with high-quality materials used throughout. The S trim gives you manual air conditioning and power-adjustable door mirrors, an upgrade to the SE edition adds front and rear parking sensors, while the GT edition also has ambient lighting in the cabin and dual zone air conditioning so you and your passengers can travel in comfort.
Petrol engines to choose from in the Golf are the 1.0-litre TSI, 1.5-litre TSI and 2.0-litre TSI. If you would prefer a diesel engine, opt for either the 1.6-litre or the 2.0-litre TDI diesel BlueMotion. If you want a greener option, opt for the GTE hybrid, which gives you the flexibility of a petrol engine when you need it for longer journeys, combined with eco-friendly electric power for shorter everyday trips.
BlueMotion technology is used in the Golf range to enhance fuel economy, including the use of the stop/start feature. The most economical of the conventional engines is the 1.6-litre TDI which can give you a return of up to 70.6mpg. The hybrid GTE gives 166mpg on a combined cycle. The Golf is fitted with smooth six-speed manual transmission or the dual-clutch DSG automatic gearbox.
Adaptive cruise control is an optional feature which allows you to select the distance you would like to maintain between your car and the car in front, helping to avoid forward collisions. Blind spot monitoring gives you visibility of whatever is to the side or rear of your vehicle, and is particularly useful when you are reversing out of a parking space.
DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity and an eight-inch colour infotainment touchscreen are provided on all models of the Volkswagen Golf, while the SE Navigation edition gains you enhanced sat nav technology, making it easy to find your next destination.
